Smythson is a high profile luxury leather goods and stationery retailer headquartered on Bond Street, London, the World’s premier luxury shopping High Street.
KBS was briefed to review and rebuild the operational structure and development strategy following the acquisition of Smythson by a private investor.
The initial 6 month contract became a 3+ year mission after KBS were asked to fulfil the COO role and manage Finance, IT, e-Commerce, Manufacturing, Logistics and Distribution pending the appointment of high profile, functional Directors. The new operational structure created a platform from which to build Smythson’s continued transformation from being a £15m domestic UK market retailer, to become a £100m+ International luxury brand.

Following the Key Account Management project, KBS were appointed to review the South European operations to reverse Duni’s lack of success, high staff turnover, poor manufacturing output and lack of profitability across the South European sites of France, Italy, Spain and Portugal. KBS had responsibility for the entire process to create, implement and manage the restructure of the region’s commercial and manufacturing operations. Staff turnover was reduced to manageable levels, manufacturing and some financial operations were re-sited at Duni Germany and Duni Poland and profitability was restored in line with Company expectations.

KBS were further used to coach and build the inexperienced Far East Team and establish manageable growth in the key underdeveloped Far East / Australasian market. The general HoReCa and Retail markets were proving to be too competitively priced for Duni to make significant in-roads. KBS, identified key areas for change and created, implemented and managed the process that redefined Duni’s market presence and established a firm footing for continued development. KBS subsequently moved on to the East European region to conduct a similar programme.
